5/27/2023 0 Comments Joseph Smith by Richard L. BushmanOne of the first books I took from my father’s bookshelf and read following my mission was Eternal Man. He paid a significant price to learn by study and also by faith (D&C 88:118), and it was that concentrated and consecrated effort that allowed him, like his Master, to teach as one having authority (Matthew 7:29 compare John 7:46). Truman had a way of blending seamlessly his academic training in philosophy and religion and his spiritual knowledge and conviction. Several of his talks to the New England missionaries and members made their way into our mission. Truman Madsen has been a hero of mine for many years, stretching back half a century to when I was serving in the Eastern States Mission. Such insight is precious and profound, soul satisfying, and spiritually elevating. Knowledge of Eternal Man has come to us through the instrumentality of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Madsen Lecture on 3 December 2015 at Brigham Young University, sponsored by the Wheatley Institution. This address was delivered at the annual Truman G. Millet ( was a professor emeritus of ancient scripture at BYU when this article was published. 5/27/2023 0 Comments The life beyond susanne winnackerThe book has a real message and one that shouldn't be shied away from. There are so many parallels to what is going on in our own world today - and this for me only made the book all the more effective. Anthony has obviously put so much thought into this book it's unreal. But it's in a far more subtle and I want to say terrifying, way. Just as much as everyone else does, right? When I knew this book would be just that, the End of the World, it did scare me a little before I even sat down to read it. I hate the thought of the End of the World. So the world that we're presented with within Oblivion terrifies me. I like knowing what's going on, where I'm going and when, what time I have to be there, why I'm going somewhere, and so on. The book has really touched a nerve with me and made me think big time. The Old Ones themselves initiate it, but this book is very clever in the way that it shows human behaviour and we can see that when faced with horror, we as a race, a species, fall. Both regarding the series and it's characters, and on a wider scale. 5/27/2023 0 Comments One true loves book summaryOne True Loves walked, so The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo could run. They couldn’t come up with anything more encouraging than that? Was I missing something? Was it going to improve?Ī million-plus-copy best seller in Korea, Please Look After Mom is the stunning, deeply moving story of a family’s search for their mother, who goes missing one afternoon amid the crowds of the Seoul Station subway. It seemed to me that this was a rather pedestrian story in rather plodding prose about an ageing mother who goes missing on a crowded subway and her guilt-stricken adult children’s search for her. I was about a quarter of the way through Please Look After Mom (translated as Please Look After Mother in the UK) and was bored witless by it so I decided to re-check its nomination for the Man Asian Literary Prize to see why I should have been enjoying it. Hmm, perhaps I should have guessed that an ‘international best-seller’ with a million sales in Korea alone would be a disappointment… 5/27/2023 0 Comments Ruby's Wish by Shirin Yim BridgesBased upon the inspirational story of the author's grandmother and accompanied by richly detailed illustrations, Ruby's Wish is an engaging portrait of a young girl who strives for more and a family who rewards her hard work and courage. The second part, Skáldskaparmál, presented as a dialogue between Ægir, the God of the Sea and Bragi, the God of Poetry, is a fascinating textbook on skaldic poetry, including the uses of alliteration and kennings. The first part of the Prose Edda is the Gylfaginning (The Tricking of Gylfi), dealing with the creation of the world and the major elements of Norse mythology. The two Eddas have had a profound effect on European literature in both style and content, not least on J.R.R. Along with the Elder or Poetic Edda written by an unknown poet a half-century earlier, the Prose Edda is a major source of much older Norse mythology as it had evolved through the generations. (Translated by Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur.)Īlso known as the Younger Edda or Snorri's Edda, the Prose Edda is a three-part work composed or at least compiled by thirteenth-century Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturluson. Here's the cover copy: 5/26/2023 0 Comments Killing You Softly by Lucy CarverInterspersed with the murder mystery, are scenes between Alyssa and her boyfriend Jack, who is still as adorable as ever. I always try to pay careful attention to these because I’m desperate to spot the clues that are vitally important. There are several passages throughout the book where Alyssa has to think back on things that have happened or conversations that she has had with people. This is a trait which Alyssa shares and makes each mystery even more interesting because you know that even the smallest detail could be the one that breaks the puzzle and solves the case. This series reminds me so much of the TV show ‘Unforgettable’ which is about a female detective with perfect memory recall. She’s unable to resist investigating the death, when she starts to receive taunting clues and messages, indicating that someone is playing a taunting game of cat and mouse with her. Alyssa’s photographic memory comes in handy when a local girl dies and she begins to find unusual links between the two of them. This is the second book in the series about main character Alyssa and the girls of St Jude’s Academy. |
